THE SPRINGS INSIDE EVERY BOARD
Exo Flex replaces a traditional timber stringer with a precision-engineered leaf spring system. The result is a board that stores kinetic energy through load and releases it as drive — giving you increased speed & is tuned specifically to your weight.

Anatomy of Exo Flex
An engineered, tailored, carbon fibre leaf spring is intergrated into the top and bottom of the shaped board centrally running nose to tail.
SPRINGS REPLACE STRINGER
Precision built laminated carbon fibre composite leaf springs running the full length of the board replace the traditional timber stringer for more flex control as well as structural integrity.
MULTIPLE LAMINATED LEAVES
The Exo Flex system uses multiple uni-directional carbon fibre leaves layed in a leaf spring pattern. This allows us to fine tune locations of lesser or greater degrees of flex.
INTERGRATED TOP & BOTTOM OF BOARD
The full integration of both top and bottom springs has them not only working together to enhance speed but to also completely eliminate chatter in windy, choppy, lumpy surf conditions.
TUNED TO RIDER WEIGHT
Spring rigidity is calibrated to each riders specific weight. A 60kg surfer and a 90kg surfer ride different spring layups - the board retains its nominal rocker and speed, through turns regardless of rider weight.
HOW EXO FLEX WORKS
Exo Flex replaces the traditional timber stringer with a precision engineered carbon fibre, leaf spring system. The result is a board that very efficiently loads up on kinetic energy during turns releasing it as pure drive. All this in a system with almost limitless permeations that can be tailored to the riders specific weight and preferred conditions.
1 - SPRIING REPLACES STRINGER
For the past 60 years or more surfboards have relied primarily on a timber stringer for the majority of a surfboards longitudinal strength and overall rigidity. Exo Flex replaces this stringer with two engineered carbon fibre leaf springs which are tuned to the board and rider, enhancing performance.
2 - BOARD LOADS UNDER PRESSURE
Boards retain Kinetic Energy as they load up and bend through turns, it’s how quickly that energy can be released that makes the difference. This is where Exo Flex gets it’s explosive speed, the multiple, staggered carbon layers and their positioning in the board snap back once the pressure is removed in a tiny fraction of the time it takes a timber stringered board.
3 - ENERGY STORED IN THE SPRING
Kinetic energy is stored by the two springs during the loading phase as the surfer initiates a turn and the energy releases coming out. It’s the same physics as a drawn bow releasing an arrow or a pole vault pole under load.
4 - RELEASED AS DRIVE & PROJECTION SPEED
With the Exo Flex system you exit the turn with more speed than you had going in due to the unloading of the springs. The energy had to go somewhere and it’s changed form to drive, speed and projection.
Tuned to your weight
Surfers come in varying weights and accordingly the amount of flex in their surfboards should also vary to suit. The Exo Flex system allows us to provide a wide variety of different sized springs and combinations to suit both, surfer weight and or the conditions intended for use.
When you order an Exo Flex board through Album Surf or Campbell Designed, your weight and the boards intended use are factored into the spring selection resulting in a level of customisation only available from EXO FLEX. Something you feel from the first wave.

EPS/EPOXY & PU/EPOXY
EPS/EPOXY
Our EXO FLEX construction uses our springs intergrated into shaped expanded polystyrene foam blanks fibreglassed with epoxy resin. Other glass can be used such as Flax, Basalt or Carbon Fibre. This results in a light super responsive board with full Exo Flex energy return. Album Surf’s factories build all US EXO FLEX boards in this construction.
PU/EPOXY
Same again our EXO FLEX construction uses our springs intergrated into shaped Polyurethane Foam Blanks glassed with epoxy resin as well. Some people like the tradition of the PU foam though it does add slightly to the finished weight of the boards. The Exo Flex spring system blends nicely with the PU to deliver the same incredible performance.
Tested, Proven, Documented
Exo Flex construction has been independently tested using mechanical load equipment. This was used to study and assess the flex and strength characteristics of Exo Flex compared to traditional timber stringered PU/Polyester, competitors various EPS/Epoxy constructions and against other different sized Exo Flex spring layups.
INCREASED BOARD STRENGTH VS PU/POLY = 25% + INCREASE
